A KISS NOW AND THEN

CAST OF CHARACTERS

KISANDRA SEARCY (47 years old)

JULIUS MCCULLOUGH (70 years old)

KISS MCCULLOUGH (16 years old)

Kisandra Searcy is receiving a visit from her father, Julius McCullough at the Bedington Hills Correctional Facility for Women.  They sit opposite each other with a glass partition between them.  They simultaneously pick up the phones so they can speak.

KISANDRA

Hello, Daddy.

JULIUS

Hey, sweetheart.  You know it kills me to see you in here.  I’m so sorry there wasn’t more that could be done, Kisandra.

KISANDRA

It’s nobody’s fault but my own.  I’m the so called adult.  I let a major mistake in my youth ruin my entire life. And my family’s lives.

JULIUS

We’re not ruined.  If anything I belong behind bars.  I wasn’t perfect; I reacted rashly to the circumstances just like you did with that young man. Dire consequences.  We all pay a price.

KISANDRA

I was stubborn and sassy.  Thought I was grown and was convinced I knew more than you.  Look where that attitude’s gotten me?  A prestigious position in academia.  A respected scholar…it’s all gone.

JULIUS

You can have that again, darling.  This isn’t a life sentence.

KISANDRA

It might as well be.  Who’s going to hire me to teach their children now?

JULIUS

Dana will help you find work.  He’s very resourceful.

KISANDRA

He had to learn how to be with a mother like me.  I should have let you raise him.

JULIUS

He’s going to be a better parent than both of us.  And Mahalia is a gem.

KISANDRA

I gave that girl such a hard time, but she’s the best thing to happen to my son.

JULIUS

I know it’s going to be a difficult time, but you know we’ve got your back.  Especially me.  I should have never let you push me away.  For a long time I wasn’t even sorry for what I did, but now I know that was wrong.

KISANDRA

We’re always wishing we could turn back time, but if it were possible I’d definitely warn my younger self.

JULIUS

(softly chuckles)  She wouldn’t listen.  Your mama never listened either and that’s why I gave you Louise as your middle name.

KISANDRA

(smiling as she reminisces) And she gave me Kiss as a nickname because I was always sucking my teeth.  Lord, I miss her.  She would not be happy though.

JULIUS

She used to say to me all the time ‘Julius, get your head out the past and figure out your future’.  I’m giving the same advice to you. (the visiting hours are over announcement comes over the speakers)

KISANDRA

Daddy…

JULIUS

I’ll be back as soon as I can.  Praying for you, baby girl. (holds his hand up to the glass)

KISANDRA

(Kisandra does the same while trying to hold back tears)  I love you, old man.

JULIUS

(shows surprise at her statement) Not more than I love you.
